Further expansion saw a 5 bedded delivery suite within the maternity unit and a 4 cot special care baby unit. The existing theatre was upgraded and a new theatre suite with three new theatres was introduced. There were new wards for surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics and a new day ward. The first stage was completed in May 1995 and comprised of the main ward block and almost all the new beds. Construction began in February 1993 with the foundation stone being laid by the Secretary of State for Scotland in June of that year. After a full option appraisal of the best way to deliver an expanded range of acute services locally, the Scottish Office gave approval in May 1990 to the option of redeveloping the hospital on the existing site. The floor is a checkerboard pattern of white and grey tiles. White trim lines the top of the walls along with blue and white speckled base boards. The walls are tri-colored, with the bottom half being a solid purplish-blue and the upper half being a lavender with white wavy lines printed over it, separated by white crown molding. Despite being double doors, only one person can pass through them at the same time. The patient then leaves the room, changing back into their clothes if needed.Ī pair of double doors with windows lead into this room. Once diagnosis or treatment is completed, the patient will sit up in the bed and wait for the nurse to allow them up. If a patient is diagnosed with an illness that is cured in the Ward, they must still change into their regular clothes and leave the Ward, even if they are to return immediately for treatment. The Ward can be use to both diagnose and cure patients.
